A Nice Link...

The Fall of Rex

After only a 30 minute attack and 400 pellets conducted by 4 mercenaries with 2 pistols and 2 rifles, we took down the last of our recycled toy abomination mutant monster. Unfortunately the first half of the video didn't record, but the dual layered blast shield for the camera lens held up quite nicely, so here are the highlights in this 2 minute clip.

MEGA-DEVASTATOR-REX!!!

The inconceivable has happened! Late last night, when the studio was empty, lightning hit the Tramway Building, the current traveled down to the first floor, through to Jacques and Curtis' office and electrified the pile of devistated toy debris left over from three months of Gun Club gatherings... As it got energized with an estimated 4000 volts of kinetic energy, a nearby vial filled with black ooze from the Sydney Tar Ponds (from Curtis' personal collection) got hit by the electric blast, shattered and spread its contents all over the heap of plastic and rubber.... the next morning we saw what had emerged from the carnage... MEGA-DEVISTATOR-REX!!!

Here's the never before seen footage of this indestructable goliath: A mutant monstrosity amongst men, a collosal abomination that will be the Collideascope Gun Club's greatest challenge to date! Can we bring down this behemoth before it's too late?! We'll find out this Monday at 7pm!

Book Review

Creating Characters with Personality shows artists how to create a distinctive character, then place that character in context with a script, establish hierarchy, and maximize the impact of pose and expression. Practical exercises help readers put everything together to make their new characters sparkle. I loved this book and all the different guest artists' takes on their own style and how it effects the design and look of the series you could developing offers lots of knowledge to any designer conceptualizing new characters for any new series.

Invincible. This collection is just amazing! What a great story combined with gorgeous artwork. The most impressive aspect is the simple approach to graphically telling a story that delivers a punch you feel in your gut days later. You'll love these characters, even as you start to see the undercurrents of their failings. But unlike other comics that can sometimes revel in dark morality, this one deftly avoids such cynicism and manages to maintain its humanity and sympathetic "everyman/woman" characters. But also, this comic is hilarious! The comedy/timing is spot on, and keeps the book an enjoyable read even in its darkest moments. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough. Image put together a GREAT book with lots of extras, beautifully printed and bound. This truly is the best format for the series to ultimately appear in. Volume 2 comes out in September.

Cars

Well, I saw Cars the other day. I must admit it was better than I had expected, it's not the best Pixar film, but it is very good. I immensely enjoyed the short at the start and the trailer for Brad Bird's next film Ratatouille. I wonder if the difficulty of making Cars was worth it... because from what little knowledge I have about 3D this must have been VERY technically difficult to produce. When it was done I was entertained and delighted to see it. There were many other 3D-CG films previewed before the film, in fact there was a lot of them! I counted seven! Including the films that have already come out this year that's 13 animated films coming out this year! It's too bad only one of those is classically animated. That's averaging one every month for 2006!

1. Cars
2. Monster House
3. Happy Feet
4. Over The Hedge
5. The Ant Bully
6. Barnyard
7. Meet The Robinsons
8. Flushed Away
9. The Wild
10. Ice Age 2
11. Open Season
12. Hoodwinked
13. Curious George

That MUST be a record or something!!! I must say maybe 4 of these films (excluding Cars) look either cool or entertaining in someway after seeing the trailers, but the others look down right awful. Cars is the only one I've seen from this list. I'm told Hedge and Ice Age are funny and worth seeing, and Flushed Away is probably the only one I might see in theaters this year. The remainder are typical films that use the CG medium as a novelty, a lot are all looking like cookie cutter time-fillers and in fact make them all seem to be a bit needless in their function. It will be a couple years before Disney/Lasseter develop multiple/meaningful traditionally animated films again. Ratatouille (coming out next summer) will be a refreshing treat after a year of these quickly-pumped-out 3D movies... here's the trailer:
