Tom Beg - Projection Mapping
Here's a Projection Mapping project produced as the final piece of Tom Beg's MA degree at UCA Rochester. Inspired by James Turrell, Dan Flavin, Keith Sonnier, Olafur Eliasson and a number of other artists and practitioners, Tom set about creating a projection installation aboard LV21 - a decommissioned lightship currently moored at Gillingham Pier in the county of Kent in the United Kingdom.
In order to develop content for the animations, he worked in conjunction with an event called International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend - a worldwide amateur radio festival dedicated to the education and continued practice of radio and Morse code communication. The animations feature messages written in Morse code as visualised by dots and dashes.

The Art of Animation and Motion Graphics
Animation has been captivating audiences for more than a hundred years. From classic forms like hand drawn and stop-motion, to cutting-edge techniques like motion graphics and CGI, animation has a long history of creating style and poetry unachievable through live action filmmaking. It is a tool for educating, a place for experimentation and play, and a way of telling personal stories that reach the viewer with powerful visual metaphors.

Jerry Nelson
On August 23rd, veteran puppeteer and master muppet performer Jerry Nelson passed away at the age of 78.
Nelson puppeteered close to 1,000 characters created by the famed Jim Henson during his 47-year career. He is credited for 120 of these character performances, and was one of the original muppeteers with Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
His most notable characters included Gobo on Fraggle Rock; The Count, Herry Monster, Sherlock Hemlock, Mr. Johnson, Simon Soundman, Little Jerry, Farley, Biff, Herbert Birdsfoot, and Snuffy (1971-1978) on Sesame Street; and he performed Floyd Pepper, Lew Zealand, Crazy Harry, Uncle Deadly, Robin the Frog, Louis Kazagger, Fleet Scribbler, J.P. Grosse, and Slim Wilson on The Muppet Show.
Nelson was a major part of other projects featuring Jim Henson's Muppets, including the 1984 movie "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and other television series including the 1980s "Fraggle Rock" and 1990s "Muppets Tonight."
In recent years, Nelson gave up the physically demanding job of operating the Count and other puppets on "Sesame Street" but still voiced the characters. The show's new season launches in September and Nelson's voice will be heard.

The story of the last Seal Child’s journey home. After their mother’s disappearance, Ben and Saoirse are sent to live with Granny in the city. When they resolve to return to their home by the sea, their journey becomes a race against time as they are drawn into a world Ben knows only from his mother’s folktales. But this is no bedtime story; these fairy folk have been in our world far too long. It soon becomes clear to Ben that Saoirse is the key to their survival.

Chris Oatley's "Is Your Concept Art Portfolio Versatile Or Just Confusing?"
Good, practical career advice for those hoping to "break in" from Disney artist Chris Oatley on how to put together your portfolio:
Every good concept art portfolio showcases the artist’s versatility.
But many artists think they are demonstrating versatility when they are actually demonstrating a lack of focus.
It’s good ol’ fashioned fear-of-commitment.
In our ‘Paper Wings’ episode Ten Steps To A Winning Portfolio we advised that artists demonstrate specialization in favor of versatility when applying for a job in a creative “pipeline.”
Artistic specialization can drastically benefit your career as a concept artist (whether you’re a character designer, layout artist, environment painter or some other type of conceptual illustrator).
So, today, I’m going to challenge you to reconsider the way you’re pursuing your creative dreams as I debunk The Myth Of Versatility…

Faith Erin Hicks' Marceline And The Scream Queens!
Halifax's own Faith Hicks is doing an Adventure Time Comic!
After Mike Holmes did an obviously fantastic job with his version of the comic, Faith's is coming soon, and it's sure to delight and thrill.
Article via ComicsAlliance
It's great seeing Princess Bubblegum and her vampire bud Marceline in Boom! Studios' monthly Adventure Time title, but it's been twice as nice to read along with the heroines as they pursue a rock and roll fantasy all their own in the six-issue Marcline and the Scream Queens miniseries. The good times roll on August 8 in Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens #2 by Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), with covers by regular Adventure Time series artist Shelli Paroline, Erica Henderson, Jen Wang and a Sleater-Kinney album inspired cover by JAB. Making the issue extra special is its backup story entitled "Grumpy Butt" by none other than Faith Erin Hicks (Friends With Boys) that sees the book's stars explore a monochrome region of the Land of Ooo that will have the red-craving Marceline feeling blue. Boom! has provided CA with a first-look at "Grumpy Butt" from Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens #2, which you can preview after the cut.
